The last and most amazing book I've red was "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk, a Turkish writer. It's about a Turkish poet who was born in a small town in Eastern Anatolia, grew up in Istanbul and then had to flee to Germany because of his critical writings. Now he's around 40 and comes back to his birth town to write about the suzide girls and the radical muslimic wariors.
A nother reason why he comes back is his old friend and only true love.
Because of a blizzard the whole town is cut off by the rest of the world and for one week no one is able to get into the town or out of it.
Strange things happen to the writer Ka, when he starts researching about the suizide girls. All of them where strong muslimes and wore the turban as a symbol of their religion. So he gets involved into a labyrinth of intreges, politics and religion.
Although many bad things happen to Ka, this one week is the happiest week in his live. After 10 years in exil he's able again to start writing poems about the snow and about the small town Kars. Also the woman he always loved, becomes his girlfriend.
To read this book is amazing and if you just start reading the first few lines, you jump into a nother world. it's beautiful how the writer descripes the falling snow and the way he moves. You really can imagine to be in this small town and snow is falling, although you're sitting in Australia by 30 degrees.
Orhan Pamuk is a well known writer in Turky but also all around Europe. The opinions about him are devided. Many people in Turky critisise, that he writes about situations he's not able to imagine. How can a writer who lives in a beautiful flat at the Bosporus write about the live and poorness of people in Eastern Anatolia? Sometimes he also writes very critical about the government and the Turkish history. Some people welcome that and other don't.
In my opinion his books are just fantastic to read and they show you a lot of problems of Turkys past, present and future.
